I remember when I first started doing this website, and I reached out to publishers to receive their press releases, reviews and previews; Zenescope was the first to give me anything, and Raven Gregory was my first interview. It seems interesting to me that Raven’s Comic Book writing career mirrors what most hopeful writers could re-create. He got his start with writing his first series, The Gift, a Creator Owned series published by Image Comics (I believe it was self published at first). From there Raven would eventually go to Zenescope where he developed into a jack of all trades kind of player. He became an Executive Editor, and Writer, and more importantly he helped expand Zenescope from their early days into much of what it has become today. Now, Raven is going off on his own, creating Broken Butterfly Comics, his attempt at creating a lasting imprint on the Comic Book Industry.
So, out of the ashes of personal tragedy, Raven Gregory is back, and making a bold statement to the Comic Book Industry as a whole, I’M BACK! Personally, I love the move, and while I haven’t always loved his writing at Zenescope (to be fair when you have a hand in writing almost all the books that Zenescope put out while he was there, sometimes your writing would suffer too) Raven has an obvious talent, and love of the Comic Book Industry that we should all admire.
I admire the fact that he took a step back after everything he’s gone through and made sure his next step was his best foot forward. He could have stuck with Zenescope, but he didn’t. Raven choose the more daring, and honorable path, he’s creating his own legacy, and he’s doing it himself.
After months of posting cryptic posts on Facebook about new projects, Raven has finally let us all in on his first Creator Owned Book post Zenescope, and for Broken Butterfly Comics called Widows Web.
Here’s the synopsis:
Set in a world that is not our own, the story follows Dahlia White, an unassuming bartender living in the strange yet familiar Tcesni City, where she attempts to balance her normal — and sometimes not so normal — life with the horrifying secret of who and what she really is. A balance that is thrown into absolute chaos when a down-on-his-luck guy, Pterra Atrus, walks through her door and catches her eye, turning her already crazy world upside down. A world where not everything or everyone is what they seem.
Where the fairy tale of boy meets girl ends, and the horror begins.
With that information out of the way, let’s get to the exciting part for all Raven Gregory fans out there, Widows Web will debut with a special #0 issue at Phoenix Fanfest this December 12-14. At Fanfest will be Raven Gregory, and Autumn Ivy (the two creators of the series) along with penciler Ivan Snyder and cover artist Nei Ruffino.
